To help sustain a two-year-old, 100-per-cent volunteer driven endeavor which provides full, hot, nutritious meals to 100-plus Canmore, Banff, Exshaw and Morley residents each week, ranging from the homeless and poor, time- and cash-strapped young families, recent immigrants to Canada, First Nations families, long-time Canmore seniors feeling isolated in their community, and recent arrivals seeking to find connections. Each week donations cover about $2 of the average $2.75 cost per meal, and we pull out of pocket or seek help from the Bow Valley Food Bank to cover the shortfalls.

They operate out of the St. Micheals Anglican Church facilities, which they do not have to pay for, and 90 per cent of our volunteers come from all local churches.

Q1: Bow Valley Early Childhood Development Coalition

How the donation will be used:
  • Creation of a monthly activity calendar for parents of children 0-6 outlining all programs and activities available to them across the Bow Valley.
  • Host the “Pre-School Fair” event dedicated to introducing parents to the myriad of ECD resources and supports in the Bow Valley and that helps to educate parents on the milestones to look out for during the 3rd and 4th year of life
  • Implement an important program called “Gearing Up for Kindergarten", an 8 week program for 4 year olds who will be attending Kindergarten the following year and their parents. A readiness program to set children up for success and to educate parents on some of the readiness factors so they still have time to work on them before their child enters the school system.

Identifying and developing children’s ability to learn before they enter the educational system is an extremely important time to identifying potential challenges and consider early intervention.

This Bow Valley Early Childhood Development Coalition recognizes the importance of prevention and early intervention.  The funds received allow for their work to continue through 2015 year, until more permanent funds can be secured.
Total Donation: $10,300

Q4: Banff Community Foundation

A thank you letter:

"Dear 100 + Women Who Care Rockies,

The Banff Community Foundation was delighted to be awarded speaking space on last night’s agenda. As I mentioned, the community foundation is in a unique position and sits at the relatively uncommon intersection of wealth and poverty; of doors open to possibility and doors closed; of boundless opportunity on one side and seemingly insurmountable barriers on the other. The foundation helps urgent projects find urgently needed resources and the support of the 100+ Women Who Care Rockies is truly urgent for the ‘Turning Loss into Hope’ project, one of our valley’s most compelling priorities.

The original application to the 100 Women, last September (cited below) began with some ‘whispering’ - me listening to some front line workers dream  about how they would like to help, nurture and really change the conversation. Now, in November 2014, ripples are turning into waves of energy; trust is growing and a feeling of encouragement is building. Last night, I alluded to the sad stories heard - about suicide, depression, anger, conflict, gangs, violence and chronic sadness that is plaguing Morley. Before we arrived at Stewart Creek, one of the elders whispered a blessing in her native language. She also told us that she had seen an eagle that gave her confidence ‘that everything would be all right’. She meant – that the evening would go well and she was right! With the support of your members, we are encouraging the elders to trust, be trusted and turn loss into hope.

The Banff Community Foundation"
